MIRAMAR, Fla., July 28, 2021 – Spirit Airlines (NYSE: SAVE) plans to double down in Honduras by launching service on Nov. 17, 2021 at the newly-established Palmerola International Airport (XPL), located on the outskirts of the capital city of Tegucigalpa.

The new commercial airport, currently operating as Palmerola Air Base, is part of the Honduran Government’s long-term vision to accelerate growth in the region. The airport will replace Toncontin International Airport (TGU) for all international service from the Tegucigalpa area. Spirit will offer nonstop flights between Palmerola and Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport (FLL), Miami International Airport (MIA) and George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), starting November 17. Guests flying from the areas of Tegucigalpa and Comayagua will be able to connect through Fort Lauderdale to more than35 cities in the United States.

“Our new air service to the Tegucigalpa area provides convenient nonstop travel options for both Honduras tourism and our Guests looking to visit family and friends,” said John Kirby, Vice President of Network Planning at Spirit Airlines. “We have a long history of partnership with Honduras having served San Pedro Sula since 2007, and we’re pleased to expand this relationship and become the first airline to connect the newest commercial airport in Honduras with the U.S.”

“The arrival of such an important and recognized airline as Spirit at Palmerola International Airport marks a historic moment, because it will be the first low-cost airline to fly from the central area of Honduras,” said Peter Fleming, Director of Airport Division at EMCO-Munich Group. “Our new airport is ready to start operations this year and we are proud to say: welcome aboard Spirit. We promised and today we delivered: achieving the arrival of new airlines, with cheap air tickets and with more destinations. The arrival of Spirit makes all of this possible.”

Spirit began service to Honduras in 2007 with flights between Ramon Villeda Morales International Airport in San Pedro Sula (SAP) to Fort Lauderdale. The airline later expanded its offerings by adding nonstop service to Orlando (MCO) and Houston (IAH). Earlier this month, Spirit added Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) to its schedule at SAP.
